Trailer for Killing the Messengers (Dir. Bryony Dunne / 2020)
Manteis — or “diviners,” ones who interpret omens — were known to use birds as “divine messengers” in ancient Greece, deliberately seeking them out in times of crisis. In Killing the Messengers a team of scientists carry out ornithological research on the remote Greek island of Antikythera, where thousands of migratory birds rest and refuel before continuing their journeys across the Mediterranean Sea. Like the Manteis of the past, these scientists are seeking messages, too, regarding birds as “exceptional indexes for tracking environmental risk factors”.
